Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Sandy Alomar, Jr. returned to the Chicago White
Sox on Wednesday, as the team agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the
free agent catcher.
Alomar played 51 games with the White Sox last season before being traded to
the Colorado Rockies on July 29th in exchange for minor league pitcher
Enemencio Pacheco and cash considerations.
The 36-year-old Alomar hit .287 with seven homers and 25 RBI for Chicago and
then batted .267 with 12 RBI in 38 games for Colorado.
"Sandy is the perfect guy to come in and mentor our young catchers, Miguel
Olivo and Josh Paul," said White Sox general manager Ken Williams. "We know
what type of player he is and what his presence means to a clubhouse, and he
knows our pitching staff and the American League."
A career .275 hitter, Alomar has 104 homers and 517 RBI over 15 major league
seasons. He currently ranks sixth among active players with 1,113 games
caught. Alomar played 1990-2000 in Cleveland and has also spent time with San
Diego.
