SPiN's Hottest Significant Other Tournament, Savory 16

When the NCAA Tournament and BCS rankings are revealed each year, there inevitably are fans who believe their teams were slighted. The same applies to SPiN's Hottest Significant Other Tournament. Readers overwhelmed us with e-mail, and here are our answers:

Dasha Zhukova and Marat Safin?
She is, in a word, incredible. We think she could be a runway model, but alas, she's only a medical student. So chances are good she's not only hotter than your girl, but smarter, too.

Kelly Rowland and Roy Williams?
They were engaged a year-and-a-half ago, then they broke up. Now, Rowland and Williams are supposedly on again. Inconsistency will cost you -- ask any mid-major ...

Sheryl Crow and Lance Armstong?
Yeah, we actually forgot about them. Sorry.

Angie Harmon and Jason Sehorn?
Not sure how these two didn't turn up on our radar. They've been etched in our memory since a print publication referred to Harmon as Sehorn's "hideous non-actress wife" (35th on this mean-spirited, yet hilarious list).

Tyra Banks and Giancarlo Marcaccini?
We're still a bit jammed up about Tyra ditching C-Webb for this clown. Tyra's performance this year -- from her awful show, America's Next Top Model, to dating this guy -– brings to mind the plight of a major school that schedules all sorts of second- and third-tier opponents. The result is a low HPI (hot percentage index), and thus, no postseason.

Lisa Dergan and Scott Podsednik?
In a normal year, Dergan would be a top-five seed. Since we can't think of any legitimate reason how she slipped through the cracks (we're still kicking ourselves), we'll have to offer up that Dergan was ruled ineligible for the tournament due to sanctions against her for dating director Michael Bay. But send them a gift for their Feb. 4 wedding and it'll make us feel better!

And readers, just remember, if you don't include an e-mail address to Your SPiN, we can't respond to questions like this one from Disappointed in Tempe: "Ummmm ... can I write-in for Amy Mickelson?" Sorry to disappoint (pun intended), but she doesn't fit into any of the Playmate/athlete/model/actress/singer/somehow famous categories.

Without further delays, here's official results from the first round:

1. Former NBA center Rony Seikaly and model Elsa Benitez defeated tennis icons Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf by a landslide -- 92 to eight percent.

2. Balding Detroit Lions quarterback Jeff Garcia and Playboy Playmate Carmella DeCesare handed Los Angeles Dodgers shortstop Nomar Garciaparra and women's soccer legend Mia Hamm an old-fashioned beating -- 81 to 19 percent.

3. Phoenix Coyotes center Petr Nedved and model Veronica Varekova topped St. Louis Cardinals shortstop David Eckstein and actress Ashley Drane in one of the most lopsided first round results -- 97 to 3 percent. Ouch.

4. Pro golfer Tiger Woods and Swedish model Elin Nordegren easily defeated Florida Marlins backup catcher Matt Treanor and volleyball player Misty May -- 79 to 21 percent.

5. New York Islanders center Alexei Yashin and model/actress Carol Alt put up a good fight but eventually lost to career backup quarterback A.J. Feeley and USA soccer star/sideline reporter Heather Mitts -- 64 to 36 percent. Alas, no errant passes were thrown by Feeley to help boost Yashin and Alt to victory.

6. Sean Avery (Los Angeles Kings center) and Elisha Cuthbert (actress) easily defeated Denver Nuggets superstar forward Carmelo Anthony and MTV veejay LaLa Vazquez -- 97 to 3 percent.

7. Backup NFL quarterback Tim Hasselbeck and TV personality Elisabeth Hasselbeck almost pulled off a first-round upset over surfer Kelly Slater and model Gisele Bundchen. But the key word here is "almost," and the tribe has spoken -- 64 to 36 percent.

8. St. Louis Rams safety Adam Archuleta and Playboy Playmate Jennifer Walcott won 89 percent of the vote against former NFL quarterback Rodney Peete and actress Holly Robinson Peete to move on to the Savory 16.

9. Three out of four voters preferred San Antonio Spurs point guard Tony Parker and Desperate Housewives hottie Eva Longoria over iconic English soccer player David Beckham and one-time pop superstar Victoria.

10. A late rally by Utah Jazz forward Memhet Okur and former Miss Turkey Yeliz Caliskan failed to unseat mostly minor-league baseball pitcher Casey Daigle and softball pitcher Jennie Finch from the tournament -- 51 to 49 percent.

11. Figure skaters David Pelletier and Jamie Sale easily defeated New York Knicks shooting guard Quentin Richardson and actress/singer Brandy -- 86 to 14 percent. Readers have informed us that Richardson and Brandy are no longer engaged. In related news, several Web reports have said Brandy transformed Richardson's tattoo on her back into a cat.

12. Race car driver Dario Franchitti and actress Ashley Judd won the vote against sure-fire Hall of Fame catcher Mike Piazza and Playboy Playmate Alicia Rickter -- 62 to 38 percent.

13. New York Mets pitcher Kris Benson and former stripper Anna Benson were upset by soon-to-be retired MLB pitcher Scott Erickson and sportscaster Lisa Guerrero -- 64 to 36 percent.

14. Former No. 1 NFL Draft pick Tim Couch and Playboy Playmate Heather Kozar narrowly defeated tennis legend Pete Sampras and actress Bridgette Wilson -- 56 to 44 percent. This matchup could've gone either way, with the vote hanging on the fence until the last possible minute.

15. Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer and Denver Broncos cheerleader Kollette Klassen upset New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and current girlfriend/Penthouse Pet Cassia Riley -- 65 to 35 percent.

16. And last but definitely not least, in a matchup that mirrors this past weekend's Patriots-Broncos AFC divisional playoff game, Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Cale Hulse and Playmate/actress Gena Lee Nolin knocked off two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Tom Brady and actress Bridget Moynahan by a hair (or an interception returned for 100 yards) -- 52 to 48 percent.

As with last week, voting will continue until Monday night when we will declare a winner based on poll numbers. Elegant Eight voting will take place Wednesday, Jan. 25.
