CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

WASHINGTON -- Once the lightning stopped, D.C. United resumed pouring goals down on the Colorado Rapids, scoring twice on either side of a short delay for a 4-1 victory on Thursday night.

Nicholas Addlery and Fred assisted each other on two goals, and Luciano Emilio added another after the match was delayed 28 minutes by lightning in the 77th minute.

Addlery's first career goal came on a header off a corner kick by Fred and gave United a 2-1 lead in the 71st minute.

Fred sprinted into the box, took an assist from Addlery, and blasted a shot between two defenders that gave D.C. United a 3-1 lead in the 82nd minute. The Brazilian promptly received a yellow card for excessive celebration -- flashing an undershirt that read "Jesus Loves You."

Emilio capped the scoring in the 87th with an assist from D.C. United captain Christian Gomez.

Gomez converted a penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute. Gomez's fourth goal of the season was the first penalty allowed this year by Rapids goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul.

Jacob Peterson's header off an assist from Terry Cooke gave the Rapids a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Colin Clark also assisted on the play.

United played without Bolivian national team forward Jaime Moreno and United States defender Bobby Boswell and midfielder Ben Olsen. All three are playing in the Copa America tournament in Venezuela.

The Rapids were without midfielders Herculez Gomez and Kyle Beckerman, who are also with the U.S. team.

D.C. United forward Guy-Roland Kpene left the game in the 12th minute with a strained left hamstring. He was replaced by Nicholas Addlery.

Rapids defender Mike Petke hurt his left ankle in the 27th and was replaced by Chris Wingert. Postgame X-rays were scheduled to determine if Petke's ankle was broken.
