HOUSTON -- Pachuca downed Houston Dynamo in a penalty shootout Tuesday to qualify for the final of the SuperLiga tournament.
The teams were locked 3-3 in the shootout after four shots each, before Pachuca goalkeeper Miguel Calero blocked Joseph Ngwenya's effort, leaving Rafael Marquez Lugo to convert the winning penalty.
Pachuca will meet the winner of Wednesday's Los Angeles Galaxy-D.C. United semifinal for the SuperLiga title and a $1 million purse on Aug. 29.
In a game that saw three players sent off, scores were tied 2-2 at the end of extra time in front of 21,712 fans -- Houston's largest home crowd of the season.
Houston Dynamo defender Patrick Ianni got a red card in the 14th minute after he pulled down Christian Gimenez from behind, preventing a clear goalscoring opportunity. Pachuca's Andres Chitiva was ejected on a red card in the 85th minute for diving.
In overtime, Dynamo midfielder Corey Ashe received a red card in the 102nd minute for elbowing a Pachuca player in the face.
Houston started fast, scoring on a short chip shot by Dwayne De Rosario in the fourth minute.
Mexican League champion Pachuca tied it in the 28th on a goal from 18 yards by Juan Carlos Cacho.
In the 61st minute, Chitiva pounced on a rebound off a group of players and scored from 12 yards to give Pachuca a 2-1 lead.
The Dynamo, which has lost two straight in Major League Soccer, tied it in the 82nd minute through Eddie Robinson.
