CHICAGO -- Freddy Adu is back on the U.S. national team roster for an exhibition game next at Switzerland.
Adu, who played his only game for the national team last year, was among 21 players picked Tuesday for the initial roster by coach Bob Bradley. The game against the Swiss will be Oct. 17 in Basel.
Then 16, Adu made his international debut as an 81st-minute substitute against Canada on Jan. 22, 2006. He has appeared in only two matches this season since transferring to Portugal's Benfica from Major League Soccer's Real Salt Lake.
Seven players on the roster have never played for the national team: forwards Preston Zimmerman, Sal Zizzo and Robbie Findley; midfielders Maurice Edu and Danny Szetela; defender Steve Purdy; and goalkeeper Tally Hall.
Eighteen of the players are based in Europe, with only Edu, Findlay and goalkeeper Chris Seitz from MLS.
Derby midfielder Eddie Lewis and Reading goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann returned to the roster for the first time since the 2006 World Cup. The United States is on a five-game losing streak, its longest skid since 1994.
