BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) -Dutchman Erwin Koeman will coach Hungary from May 1.
Koeman, who played 31 times for the Netherlands and also coached Feyenoord, takes over from Peter Varhidi, who was appointed in 2006.
Varhidi struggled to retain the Hungarian Football Federation's full support and MLSZ president Istvan Kisteleki often said that he would prefer a foreigner as coach.
Koeman, the older brother of former FC Barcelona defender Ronald Koeman, will be presented at a news conference later Thursday.
Varhidi was credited for giving younger players a chance to prove themselves but he failed to lead Hungary to the upcoming European Championship.
Hungary has not qualified for a major international tournament since the 1986 World Cup in Mexico.
