Portsmouth wins England's FA Cup for first time in 69 years

Presented by Epson

WEMBLEY, England -- Portsmouth won its first title in 69 years by beating Cardiff 1-0 in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

Nwankwo Kanu pounced on a blunder by goalkeeper Peter Enckelman to tap in the winner from two yards out in the 37th minute, giving manager Harry Redknapp his first major trophy in 25 years of coaching.

The win also gave Portsmouth a place in next season's UEFA Cup, the first time the club has qualified for European play.

"Fantastic. For everybody, especially my family," said Redknapp, whose sister-in-law Pat Lampard -- mother of Chelsea's Frank Lampard -- died of cancer last month. "The fans, the players. It's been a difficult year off the field so this is a dream come true. We're a very close family -- it's for all my grandchildren and everybody. The players are all great, I love them all."

Portsmouth last won the FA Cup -- the world's oldest domestic cup competition -- in 1939, while Cardiff's only triumph was in 1927. Cardiff, which plays in the division below the Premier League, was trying to become the first lower-league team since 1980 to win the FA Cup.

"A slight mistake cost us," Cardiff manager Dave Jones said. "But we've done everyone proud. I hope we've given every club hope that they can achieve what they might have thought was impossible.

"I'm very proud of my players, my staff, the chairman and especially the fans. I'm sorry we couldn't see it through to the death for them."
