SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) -Ryan Johnson's second-half goal broke a long scoring drought for the last place San Jose Earthquakes, but Conor Casey scored minutes later to lift the Colorado Rapids into a 1-1 tie Saturday.
Johnson ended the Earthquake's 281-minute scoreless run in the 62nd minute for San Jose (3-10-3), winless in six matches.
The physical and defensive match featured only two corner kicks, seven shots and six yellow cards, all in the second half. San Jose coach Frank Yallop was ejected for arguing against Casey's goal.
The Rapids (6-8-2) broke a five-game losing streak on the road. Johnson's team-leading third goal was the second scored during the Earthquakes' six-game slide. San Jose has an MLS-low 11 goals this season.
Fire 2, Toronto FC 1
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. (AP) - John Thorrington blocked a clearing pass in front of goalkeeper Greg Sutton and scored in stoppage time to give Chicago a win over Toronto FC.
Chris Rolfe gave Chicago a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute, but Toronto tied it in the 59th minute on a goal by second half substitute Abdus Ibrahim.
The Fire (7-5-3) ended a five-game winless streak. Toronto (6-6-3) is 1-6 on the road this season.
Toronto played the game without leading goal scorer Danny Dichio, who missed the game due to headaches.
Real Salt Lake 2, Columbus Crew 0
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Javier Morales scored on a free kick in the fourth minute to help Real Salt Lake defeat Columbus and move into first place in the Western Conference for the first time in the franchise's four-year history.
Morales curled a direct kick around Columbus' wall from 23 yards out for his third goal this season for RSL (6-6-5), which doubled its lead in the 78th minute on a goal by Robbie Findley.
The Crew (8-5-3) nearly tied the game in the 50th minute, but Guillermo Barros Shelotto's shot hit the post.
RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando made two saves for his sixth shutout of the season, tying him with Kansas City's Kevin Hartman for most in the league.
