GLASGOW, Scotland (AP) -Scotland manager George Burley has recalled Celtic winger Shaun Maloney and Birmingham striker Garry O'Connor for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Macedonia and Iceland.
Neither featured in last week's 0-0 draw against Northern Ireland in a friendly, which appears to have prompted Burley to strengthen his attacking resources.
Maloney has scored one goal in 11 appearances for Scotland, and rejoined Celtic from Aston Villa last week.
"Shaun is a terrific player, who has great ability," Burley said Wednesday. "At Aston Villa, it was difficult when he wasn't playing. I spoke to Shaun and he felt with a couple of games under his belt that he would be back to 100 percent, so I had no hesitation in calling him up."
O'Connor has four goals in 15 internationals, but last played for Scotland in a 3-1 victory over Ukraine in October. He looks to be in form, though, after scoring twice in England's League Championship for Birmingham.
Scotland is at Macedonia on Sept. 6 and at Iceland four days later.
Alan Hutton, Lee McCulloch, Michael Stewart and Steven Fletcher are out, but Kris Commons, Darren Barr and Kevin Thomson retain their places after making their debuts against Northern Ireland.
