Ukraine beats Belarus 1-0 in World Cup qualifier

LVIV, Ukraine (AP) -Andriy Shevchenko scored an injury-time penalty for Ukraine to beat Belarus 1-0 in World Cup qualifying on Saturday.

The striker converted the spot kick in the third minute of injury time after Aleksandr Kulchiy had handled the ball in the box.

Ukraine dominated the match and had several scoring chances before Shevchenko came on for Artem Mylevskii in the 74th minute.

Shevchenko had his first chance in the 82nd but goalkeeper Yuri Zhevnov blocked the shot from just outside the box.

Belarus, whose team included FC Barcelona midfielder Alexander Hleb, was playing defensively in a bid to secure a draw before giving away the penalty.

Croatia, England, Kazakhstan and Andorra are also in Group 6.
