Crew thrashes Revolution 4-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -The Columbus Crew remained five points clear atop Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference after a 4-0 thrashing of nearest rival New England on Saturday.

The loss pushed the Revolution below Chicago on goal difference after the Fire beat New York 1-0. In other results Saturday, San Jose beat D.C. United 2-1, struggling Los Angeles was held to a 2-2 home draw by Real Salt Lake and Toronto was beaten 3-1 at home by Chivas.

Striker Jason Garey scored twice and Argentine veteran Guillermo Barros Schelotto had a goal and set up two others, with English defender Andy Iro getting the other for Columbus, who also hit the frame of the goal twice in a dominant performance.

Chicago's winner over New York came via midfielder Stephen King in the 36th minute, lifting the Fire six points ahead of the Red Bulls, who had been unbeaten in their previous six games.

San Jose kept up its playoff push with victory over D.C. United.

The Earthquakes extended their unbeaten streak to eight games and won for the fourth straight time at home. San Jose moved into fourth place in the Western Conference, only three points behind second-place Real Salt Lake.

Midfielder Arturo Alvarez gave San Jose a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute with a low shot into the right corner. Former English Premier League forward Darren Huckerby made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute.

Striker Santino Quaranta pulled one back for the visitors in the 76th minute.

Los Angeles was absent its star players David Beckham and Landon Donovan on World Cup duty and saw it winless streak reach a club-record 11 games.

Forward Bryan Jordan got his first MLS goal to put the Galaxy up 1-0 in the ninth minute before Yura Movsisyan equalized for Salt Lake in the 21st. The Armenian forward then set up Canadian striker Will Johnson's 52nd minute goal that put the visitors in front.

Striker Edson Buddle rescued a point for Los Angeles in the 69th minute, but the Galaxy remains bottom of the Western Conference, having conceded more than two goals per game this season.

Real Salt Lake moved within four points of first-place Houston in the West.

Chivas came from behind to win 3-1 at Toronto in a game where both sides were missing nine players on a mixture of international duty, injuries and suspensions.

Candadian midfielderTyler Rosenlund gave Toronto a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, receiving a beautiful pass across the box from English midfielder Rohan Ricketts.

Midfielder Daniel Paladini drew Chivas level 11 minutes later thanks to an assist by Ante Razov, and the American forward teed up Jonathon Bornstein for the go-ahead goal in the 58th. Razov got the goal his performance deserved in injury time.
