Senators owner wants to bring MLS team to city

OTTAWA -- Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk wants to bring a Major League Soccer franchise to Canada's capital.

The 14-team league is to add two franchises -- Seattle in 2009 and Philadelphia in 2010. Two more teams will be added the following year. MLS commissioner Don Garber said in July that Ottawa was among nine cities in the running.

In addition to a $40 million expansion fee, Melnyk unveiled plans for a new stadium that would seat up to 30,000. It would be built in suburban Kanata, near the Senators' NHL home arena.

The stadium's development is contingent on the franchise. The deadline for applications for the MLS is Oct. 15.
