WOLFSBURG, Germany (AP) -Japan striker Yoshito Okubo is joining Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg from Vissel Kobe.
Wolfsburg said Monday the 26-year-old Okubo, who has scored five goals in 33 appearances for Japan, will play for the club through the end of June 2011.
"I'm delighted about having the opportunity to work together with a player that I've had my eye on for quite some time," Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath said after Okubo appeared at a news conference. "His attacking qualities make him a player who can be used in a number of offensive positions and that could see him fulfill an important role within the team."
Okubo is the second Japanese player to play for the club, joining Makoto Hasebe. Okubo had 57 goals in 116 games for Vissel Kobe, after joining the club in 2007. He also played for Spanish club Mallorca during the 2005-06 season.
