MADRID, Spain (AP) -Lionel Messi scored three goals and Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 3-1 and took step toward securing a place in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Messi, watched by his Argentina national coach Diego Maradona at Atletico's Vicente Calderon Stadium, received an ovation from the opposing fans when he was substituted moments after completing his hat trick.
The second leg of the fifth-round match will be next Wednesday at Camp Nou where Barcelona will be expected to advance in a competition it has won a record 24 times, but not since 1998.
Messi scored in the 12th, 58th - from a penalty which led to the dismissal of defender John Heitinga - and 80th minutes.
Atletico replied through substitute Tomas Ujfalusi in the 69th.
On Wednesday, defending champion Valencia visits Racing Santander, while Sevilla entertains Deportivo La Coruna. Third-division Real Union, Real Madrid's conqueror in the previous round, hosts Real Betis, Valladolid visits Sporting Gijon, and third-division Polideportivo El Ejido meets Espanyol.
On Thursday, Osasuna welcomes Athletic Bilbao and Almeria travels to Mallorca.
Barcelona's victory was its 21st in 26 games in all competitions this season. The Catalan team was 11 points clear in the league and has reached the Champions League knockout stage.

LONDON (AP) - Tottenham substitute Jamie O'Hara scored one goal and set up two others to lead the defending League Cup champion to a 4-1 win over Burnley in the first-leg semifinal on Tuesday.
Spurs played poorly in the first half and trailed the League Championship promotion contender from the 15th minute, but manager Harry Redknapp sent on O'Hara for the ineffective David Bentley after halftime.
Within two minutes, the midfielder hit a corner kick for Michael Dawson to head in, and five minutes later sent a shot of his own through goalkeeper Brian Jensen's legs.
Roman Pavlyuchenko added a third goal in the 65th and moments later Burnley defender Michael Duff headed a free kick by O'Hara past his own goalkeeper.
"At halftime, you could not see that result coming for sure," Redknapp said. "But at halftime, I got into them big time and sorted a few of them out really because I was disappointed with that first half.
"I said, 'I'll find out an awful lot in the second half about a lot of you."'
The victory means English Premier League struggler Tottenham is still likely to reach the March 1 final against either Manchester United or Derby, who play the first leg of their semifinal on Wednesday. The second legs are in two weeks.
"I wouldn't say it's a mountain to climb," Burnley manager Owen Coyle said. "It's a wee bit more than that. It's a long way back but we'll go and try and be positive."
