LONDON (AP) -Newcastle striker Obafemi Martins will undergo hernia surgery, the Premier League club said Wednesday.
The 24-year-old Nigerian hopes to return to action "a couple of weeks" after being operated on by specialist Dr. Ulrike Muschaweck in Germany on Monday.
Martins has not played since sustaining a groin injury shortly before scoring Newcastle's second goal in a 3-0 win at Portsmouth in the Premier League on Dec. 14.
"All I am concentrating on is getting fit again as soon as possible so I can be back playing and helping the team," he said.
Martins is one of eight Newcastle players currently injured, with Joe Kinnear's squad stretched to its limits.
Muschaweck has previously operated on teammates Michael Owen, Shay Given and Steve Harper.
