New Mexico suspends hair-pulling player

PROVO, Utah -- A New Mexico soccer player has become an Internet celebrity for the wrong reasons.

Junior defender Elizabeth Lambert was suspended Friday for her infractions the day before during a 1-0 loss to BYU in a Mountain West Conference semifinal. Lambert is seen in video from the game throwing elbows, colliding with several players and then yanking the ponytail of a BYU player who went crashing to the ground.

Hair-pulling

Smack in the face

"My actions were uncalled for," Lambert said in a statement released by New Mexico. "I let my emotions get the best of me in a heated situation."

Lambert's actions brought unprecedented -- and unwanted -- attention to the Mountain West women's soccer tournament.

Video highlights have been airing nationally since Thursday night, and not because it was a thrilling game decided on Carlee Payne's header in the 31st minute. The focus of the highlights is more on Lambert's physical play, especially her takedown of BYU's Kassidy Shumway by grabbing her ponytail and pulling her backward.

New Mexico moved quickly to announce Friday that Lambert has been suspended indefinitely. The Mountain West followed with a statement commending the Lobos for acting promptly.

"Liz is a quality student-athlete, but in this instance her actions clearly crossed the line of fair play and good sportsmanship," New Mexico coach Kit Vela said.

Lambert was the only player to be penalized in the game, getting a yellow card in the 77th minute for colliding with a BYU player who was driving toward the Lobos' net. The highlights showed the game was physical in both directions, including an elbow to Lambert's ribs by a BYU player during a dead ball.

Lambert responded with an elbow to the back, one of many regrettable plays she made in the game.

"This is in no way indicative of my character or the soccer player I am," Lambert said in her apology. "I am sorry to my coaches and teammates for any and all damages I have brought upon them. I am especially sorry to BYU and the BYU women's soccer players that were personally affected by my actions."

She is obviously a talented player.  And since we haven't heard her name in connection with violent play before it is obvious that there was some event that precipitated her actions.

Since there is no highlights of a physical play against her I am betting that it was a verbal taunt.

Did the other team make fun of a dying relative?  Or maybe she has a physically disa

Have you seen the clips? The ponytail takedown is vintage Harding. What a bitter bitter person. I can't imagine her teammates being anything other than intimidated by her, and they're probably the happiest to see her go.

Good riddance!

Between the takedowns and the Florida player eye gouging, college sports needs some serious cleaning up.

The ref's seemed like in la-la land--about the only thing I remember is when the one player got knocked down & the New Mexico player trying to kick her head off--other than that they were clueless. Other observation is that it appeared from Lamber's expression after she did all her various actions was that these actions were normal for her & not a big deal. Maybe her & Ron Artest ought ...(more)

I coached teen youth soccer for five years and I saw this style of play quite often. It usually would come from teams with coaches who still believed in the Vince Lombardi quote "Winning isn't everything, its the only thing." Some coaches will teach this at an early age and you'd better learn it fast if you want to move up.

Players don't just make this up on th

It is one thing to say your emotions got the better of you, but where were her coaches. The thuggery just goes on and on. How could her own coaches not of yanked her off of the field. The coaching staff should also be reprimanded for letting this get as out of control as it did.

If you haven't seen the video of the college soccer player out on the field punching, kicking, pulling gouging, and running over her opponents, you have to see it!!  Not only was this chick out of control, she was flat-out trying to hurt the opponent.  Some of the worst sportsmanship I've ever seen in college athletics.  They shoulds rescind her athletic scholarship and send her but ...(more)

Yes she should be suspended and given a lesson in how to better mask your physical play.  The hair pull was over the top but just about everything else, the hard tackles, elbows, etc. are rather common once you reach the high school level of play.  The head butt was always my favorite hard play as you could always hide it when challenging on a ball in the air.  Soccer is a much more ...(more)

The replays of that little wenchs actions are infuriating.....she should be banned for at least a full season. Sadly, the internet age has made her an international villan. She will carry the weight of her punkish behavior the rest of her career/life. If you are going to act like a thug, then expect to be treated like a thug......maybe she can get a spot on the men's football team ???

I agree the ponytail pull down was a bit excessive, but if you watch the clips closely you will see she was provoked.

First one, she was elbowed in the chest area and then threw punch into back.   Second clip, the girl is reaching, grabbing, pulling or poking on her shorts / privates.

She did go alittle nuts, but the other team is by no means the victim.

If there was a little more emotion in soccer maybe people would watch it in this country.  Soccer is so so boring, it should be used to help people with insomnia.  This girl should not be suspended, she should get Nike commercial.

That kind of stuff looks like the crap Friends University (Wichita) used to do in the 90s when I was in college...except those punks would break ribs and gash heads.

UNM should not only suspend her, but kick her off the team and revoke her scholarship.

Hey Elizabeth, what's up?

I like that nasty streak you have.  Give me a call.  I'll let you hit me and pull my hair.

I bet you like physical contact. I can take the pain if you can.  Hit me up some time.  If you want, I'll hit you too!

How could the refs let the game get this far out of control.  Had they made the proper calls this player would not have had the opportunity to get this out of control.  Hopefuly the NCAA is sitting down with the referee crew to find out why the player was not ejected on the first foul.  They allowed the rough stuff to go on and on.

That would only be a half-game suspension.
