ATHENS, Greece (AP) _ Stewart Downing came off the bench to score a second half goal and give Middlesbrough a 1-0 win over Aegaleo Thursday in the UEFA Cup.
Downing replaced Boudewijn Zenden in the 70th minute.
Seven minutes later, he received a superb cross from Ray Parlour and his blistering shot left goalkeeper Mahamadou Sidibe little chance to react.
The Greeks had pushed forward in the first half, but came close to scoring only once, in the 43rd, when Giorgos Barkoglou blasted the ball just wide from the edge of the box.
Middlesbrough coach Steve McClaren's decision to send in Spanish playmaker Gaizka Mendieta after the interval gave the visitors the edge.
Aegaleo squandered another chance in second half injury time when Thomas Makris forced Middlesbrough's Austrian goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer to tip the ball over the bar.
