CARSON, Calif. -- Douglas Sequeira scored the only goal as Chivas USA defeated its first established Major League Soccer opponent with a 1-0 victory over the New England Revolution on Friday night.
Chivas USA's two other victories came against Real Salt Lake, the league's other expansion team.
"This is so big for us," Chivas defender Francisco Gomez said. "It just goes to show that we've been working hard for the past seven weeks, and it's just paying off."
Chivas USA (3-14-3) kept New England (10-3-5) from moving into first place in the Eastern Conference.
"They've certainly improved," Revolution coach Steve Nicol said about Chivas USA. "But there are no easy games in this league. Every team's difficult, and we made it easy for them."
Sequeira, who played for Costa Rica in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, scored in the 38th minute.
Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis came out of the net intending to punch away Antonio Martinez's left-wing cross. But Sequeira beat Reis to the ball and headed it into the net from 6 yards.
New England's best chance to tie came in the 80th minute on Connally Edozien's 5-yard header. But rookie goalkeeper Brad Guzan caught Edozien's shot in front of the left post.
Guzan made two saves for his second shutout.
Chivas midfielder Hector Cuadros left on a stretcher in the 87th minute with a concussion. He regained consciousness in the locker room before being transported to a hospital for observation.
