Real Betis beats Anderlecht for first Champions League win of season

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) - Brazilian striker Oliveira scored to lead Betis Sevilla to a 1-0 win at Anderlecht in the Champions League that boosted its chances of advancing.

Oliveira collected a pass through the center by playmaker Joaquin in the 68th minute, sped through the defense and put a low shot into the corner.

While Anderlecht's ninth straight Champions League loss - stretching back to its last appearance in the competition - kept it bottom of Group G, the Spanish team's first win put it within striking distance from Liverpool and Chelsea.

The two English teams tied 0-0 Wednesday and lead the standings with four points. Betis has three and Anderlecht none.

"We got three points and we proved we can win away from home," coach Lorenzo Serra Ferrer said. "Nothing has been decided yet."

Anderlecht, without standout player Vincent Kompany because of a back injury, almost had the perfect start. In the second minute, Serb forward Nenad Jestrovic hit a tightly angled volley from the right that crashed against the bar with goalkeeper Antonio Doblas beaten.

A minute later, the post saved Anderlecht when goalkeeper Silvio Proto bungled an easy ball high ball and saw a tap in from Betis float against the upright.

In the 20th minute Belgium 'keeper Proto made a reflex save on a header by Miguel Angel and the ball careened back into play off the underside of the bar. Much of Betis' best action came from Joaquin, who had left his position on the right for the center.

Anderlecht was lucky to reach halftime level but, led by winger Bart Goor, the Belgians pushed forward and forced Doblas into good saves on shots from Mbo Mpenza and Goor.

Yet is was Betis who came closest to scoring when Ricardo Oliveira hit the post on a free kick in the 62nd.

After Oliveira had scored, Anderlecht claimed a penalty when Christian Wilhelmsson went down but Italian referee Roberto Rosetti waved play on to the dismay of the 30,000 fans at the Vanden Stock stadium.

And the visitors almost went further ahead in the last minute, substitute Fernando hitting the post on a pass from Oliveira.

Anderlecht next plays Liverpool at home while Betis hosts Chelsea.
