Champions League draw offers some intriguing possibilities

Presented by Epson

LONDON (AP) - The Champions League is heading into the knockout stages, and Friday's draw could produce some intriguing matchups.

The eight group winners from the first round will be drawn against the eight runners-up - with some conditions prevailing.

The group winners are AC Milan, Arsenal, FC Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus, defending champion Liverpool, Lyon and Villarreal. The second-place teams are Ajax, Bayern Munich, Benfica, Chelsea, PSV Eindhoven, Rangers, Real Madrid and Werder Bremen.

Teams from the same country can't face each other in the round of 16, and teams that faced each other in the group stage also can't meet.

The most compelling possibility in the draw at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, is a repeat of Barcelona vs. Chelsea - the Spanish leaders against the English leaders.

The two sides met last season at this stage, with Chelsea winning 5-4 over two legs in a series littered with controversy.

Barcelona beat Chelsea 2-1 in the first leg at Camp Nou. After the game, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho alleged that Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard colluded at halftime with referee Anders Frisk to influence the outcome.

Though he was eventually exonerated, Frisk retired shortly afterward saying he and his family faced death threats.

Chelsea beat Barcelona 4-2 at Stamford Bridge in the second leg. Following that match, Rijkaard and some of his team were involved in scuffles and heated exchanges with Chelsea's security staff.

In addition, John Terry's decisive header was disputed, and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o said he was racially abused by a Chelsea steward.

Barcelona has won its last 11 league and Champions League games. Left back Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks forward to a potential rematch with the London club.

"I don't mind who we play, but Chelsea is the best team in England and it would be good for us because if we want to win the competition, we have to be able to beat everyone," he said.

Chelsea is one of three powerhouse teams that failed to win its group. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are the others. Each of the eight winners will be hoping to avoid them.
