GENEVA (AP) -FIFA has fined the Togolese Football Association as punishment for the national squad's threat of strike action before a World Cup match.
The association was fined 100,000 Swiss francs (US$80,700; ?63,300), world soccer's governing body said Friday.
During the World Cup finals in Germany, Togo players initially refused to travel to Dortmund for the game against Switzerland on June 19 because of a pay dispute with their football association. They were eventually persuaded to go after FIFA intervened.
FIFA's Disciplinary Committee said Togo's actions were "unworthy of a participant in the World Cup." It added that the Togolese FA's admission of guilt and its apology had counted in its favor.
Togo has the right to appeal the ruling until Sept. 2.
