Galaxy acquire star goalie Cannon from Rapids

CARSON, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Galaxy acquired two-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Joe Cannon from the Colorado Rapids on Friday for forward Herculez Gomez and defender Ugo Ihemelu.

The teams also agreed to trade second-round choices in next month's MLS super draft.

The 31-year-old Cannon, the Goalkeeper of the Year in 2002 and 2004, has a career record of 75-71-38, a 1.26 goals-against average and 51 shutouts in eight seasons with San Jose and Colorado. In 2006, Cannon was 9-11-7 with a 1.55 goals-against average and seven shutouts.

"We are looking to add talented and proven players to our roster," said Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas, whose team failed to make the playoffs last season for the first time in its 11-season history. "With this move we now have three world-class goalkeepers in the Galaxy organization."

The team's other goalkeepers are Kevin Hartman, the starter for eight of the past nine seasons, and Steve Cronin, who has played five games in his two seasons with the Galaxy.

The 24-year-old Gomez had 16 goals and five assists over three seasons with Los Angeles. Ihemelu, 23, had one assist in his two seasons with the Galaxy. Gomez and Ihemelu were both starters for most of the 2006 season.
