Chelsea sign Spain midfielder Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona
Spain star Cesc Fabregas has signed a deal with Chelsea, leaving Barcelona after three seasons.
With the World Cup just hours away from officially kicking off, there was a massive player move on the European club front.
Chelsea announced the official signing of Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, one of the premier playmakers in the world.
The deal is reportedly a five-year deal worth nearly £160,000 per week, with the transfer fee a reported £26.6 million.
Fabregas is set to compete for a starting spot on the Spain national team in Brazil, whether in a center midfield position or a false nine as he played at the 2012 European Championship. He had eight goals and 13 assists in La Liga play for Barcelona last season, while also notching three assists for Spain in World Cup qualifying.
The fanbase most upset about this signing is likely to be Arsenal, as Fabregas spent eight seasons at the Emirates before leaving for Barca in 2011. He was also given the captaincy at Arsenal in 2008.
It will be interesting to see how he fits in with Chelsea, as they already stocked at the attacking midfield positions. He's played in a deep-lying playmaker role before, but it's unclear if that's where Jose Mourinho envisions him lining up. Chelsea have already lost Frank Lampard and David Luiz from last season, and have needed an upgrade at center midfield. Fabregas certainly fits the bill.
With transfer worries out of the way, Fabregas can now focus on the upcoming World Cup. Spain is in a difficult group, and open up with the Netherlands on Friday.
