Countdown to Brazil: Just how hurt is Cristiano Ronaldo?
Cristiano Ronaldo's health still in question, and David Villa will call it quits in international play after the Cup.
Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo sat out the team's friendly against Greece last weekend with a thigh injury, and it has now been confirmed that the striker is also suffering from left knee tendonitis.
It isn'y necesarily time to worry yet for Portugal, though, as teammate Nani said that he expects Ronaldo to be in fine form for the start of the Cup.
"I don't believe the situation with Ronaldo is worrying," he said Tuesday, according to the Guardian. "He's going well, and he is relaxed about it. ... Things are going the right way.
"We hope that Cristiano is in good enough shape to play and to help the team."
Regardless, the fact that Ronaldo is still not in top form must be at least somewhat troubling for Portugal, who will open play in Group G June 16 against Germany.
It is not yet known if Ronaldo will play in Portugal's friendly Saturday against Mexico.
Last Cup for Villa: Spain's all-time leading scorer will be done with international play following the World Cup. David Villa announced Wednesday he won't be participating in any more events as a member of Spain's national team after Brazil.
"I don't like to say it, but yes, obviously this will be my last World Cup and my last games with the selection given my age, my level of performance, and everything I have given the team," Villa told a Spanish TV station. "It is time."
Villa will begin play with NYCFC in the team's inaugural season next year.
Scolari "worried": Host nation Brazil has a lot on its plate. Not only have their been public protests and issues with World Cup preparations, but national team manager Luis Felipe Scolari is worried about his side's ability to gel.
"It's all going according to plan if you take into consideration that we haven't played together in more than three months, and only had seven days to prepare. The players know they are not ready," he said. "We weren't ready to face a stronger opponent right now."
