Countdown to Brazil: Mexico names final roster
The day in World Cup news.
The World Cup. It's coming. We're just about a month away from the opening match between Brazil and Croatia, so here's what's happening in the soccer world.
Mexico names roster: Mexico coach Miguel Herrera revealed his 23-man roster for the cup, and there were no notable omissions, aside from, perhaps, Villarreal’s Javier Aquino. The usual suspects are there, including Javier Hernandez, Giovani dos Santos, and Olympic hero Oribe Peralta.
Of the 23 players selected, 16 play in Mexico's Liga MX.
Mexico will compete in Group A alongside host nation Brazil, plus Croatia and Cameroon.
USA and Belgium to play closed-door friendly: As was hinted at Thursday, the United States and Belgium will play a friendly leading up to the World Cup. However, it will be behind closed doors. The match is scheduled for June 12, the first day of the tournament, and the hope is it will help players get accustomed to the climate.
Aside from the match with Belgium, the United States will have three other friendlies leading up to the World Cup.
The Beautiful game: Reuters published a host of photos depicting soccer in its purest form. They're worth your time.
Crazy goal: This is barely related to the World Cup -- it's soccer, that's it -- but it's a magnificent goal from an impossible angle. This is Independiente del Valle’s Fernando Guerrero in Ecuador defying the laws of physics.
It's hard to tell if the keeper got a hand on it to help it in. Either way, amazing shot. (via SportsGrid)
