Germany's Marco Reus ruled out of the World Cup
Germany suffered a major injury blow on Friday afternoon.
Germany has plenty of depth and talent in their attacking group, but they will be without one of their most promising young players in Brazil.
Marco Reus has been ruled out of the World Cup after suffering an ankle injury in Friday's friendly against Armenia. Reus is expected to miss up to two months with a partially torn ligament.
"It's extremely saddening for him and for us," Germany coach Joachim Löw said. "Marco was in great shape and had made a fantastic impression in the training camp and in our games against Cameroon and Armenia. He was set to play a pivotal role in our plans for Brazil."
Reus had started six matches in qualifying for Germany, scoring five goals. He's a versatile attacking option, capable of playing all three positions across the attacking band of the midfield and also filling in as a forward if necessary. He had a terrific Bundesliga campaign for Borussia Dortmund, scoring 16 goals and assisting on 13 others.
"I really don't know how I am meant to find the words to express how I am currently feeling," Reus wrote on the Borussia Dortmund website. "A dream has ended from one second to the next. But I have got to look forwards and be very professional about my rehabilitation because life must go on. I will come back, even stronger than I was. My best wishes now go to the whole team and that they reach our goals without me."
Reus' replacement will be Sampdoria defender Shkodran Mustafi. The 22-year old has made only one appearance for the senior national team, last month's friendly against Poland.
Germany has plenty of attacking options, so bringing in a like-for-like sub wasn't necessary. Thomas Muller, Mesut Ozil and Toni Kroos received the most minutes in qualifying across the attacking band, while Mario Gotze, Andre Schurrle, Julian Draxler and Lukas Podolski are also threats.
Germany is in Group G, joined by Portugal, the United States and Ghana.
