Luis Suarez says he will be ready to face England
Uruguay striker Luis Suarez says he will be ready to play against England Thursday.
One of the biggest surprises of the first week of World Cup action was Uruguay falling to Costa Rica 3-1. The player most noticeably absent from the pitch during that loss was Uruguay's Luis Suarez, who had not fully recovered from knee surgery in May, but Suarez's status has now changed.
While there's no guarantee he'll play against England Thursday, Suarez told reporters that he's 100 percent and ready.
“I’m 100%, otherwise I wouldn’t be here,” Suárez said. "I knew it would be difficult [to be ready for] the first game, but if the proper time was left then I was going to be 100% afterwards. I’ve done everything I had to do.
“I’m training today with the team and I feel in good condition. I never lost the joy and the desire. I never thought I would miss the World Cup.”
This is obviously very good news for the Uruguayans. Suarez is coming off a dominant season with Liverpool in the Premier League, scoring 31 goals in 33 games. His presence will be a big boost for a Uruguay team that struggled to find any offense against Costa Rica, with its only goal coming via a penalty kick.
Even though England lost to Italy in its opener Saturday, the team managed to look dangerous, particularly on the attack, and Uruguay will likely need more than one goal against the English if its going to get its first points of this World Cup.
