Spain's Diego Costa in danger of missing World Cup
The latest word on Diego Costa has him sitting out the next 15 days -- which could force him to miss the World Cup.
It might have been the most debated substitution in a very long time.
Diego Costa, the star striker for Atletico Madrid and Spain, was subbed out of Saturday's Champions League final against Real Madrid after just nine minutes. Costa had been a doubt to play, but a controversial horse placenta treatment apparently put him on track to start for Atletico. But Costa looked sluggish and slow for nine minutes, and was quickly subbed out. The game eventually went to extra time, with Real Madrid overtaking a fatigued Atletico side, 4-1 in 120 minutes.
Did Costa know he wasn't fit to start? Did Atletico manager Diego Simeone know he might have to waste a sub by starting Costa? There were plenty of questions after the match -- but Spain manager Vicente del Bosque has to instead look toward the World Cup in less than three weeks.
And it doesn't look all that optimistic.
Costa suffered a grade one hamstring tear in his right leg and would need to rest for 15 days before being re-evaluated, doctor Pedro Guillen told a radio station after Costa underwent tests on Monday morning.
What does that mean for Costa's chances of going to Brazil?
Del Bosque said Sunday he wants each of his 23 players fit before heading to the World Cup.
"We don't know the physical state of everyone and until June 2 we are not obliged to give the list to FIFA," Del Bosque said. "We would like that on the second everybody who has been called up can train. The World Cup starts against Holland and we want everyone to be ready to go."
Costa is likely ruled out of upcoming friendlies against Bolivia and El Salvador.
