World Cup Final starting 11s: Khedira a late scratch, Kramer in
As expected, Angel Di Maria will not feature in Argentina's starting lineup
No pressure, Christoph Kramer.
According to ESPN's broadcast of the World Cup final, German midfielder Sami Khedira suffered an injury setback in the pregame warm-up and was a surprise scratch from the Germans' starting 11 -- one that had initially been the same lineup as in the already-legendary 7-1 drubbing of Brazil in the semifinal.
Khedira has been replaced by Kramer, the 23-year-old Borussia Moechengladbach midfielder who will be making only his fifth appearance for Germany in his international career.
Argentina attacker Angel Di Maria was described as being a game-time decision for Sunday's World Cup final against Germany, but not many expected him to actually make the Albiceleste's starting 11 -- and the official lineup announcements confirmed that.
Di Maria did warm up before the game, per ESPN, and will be available on the substitutes' bench. He was injured in Argentina's quarterfinal victory over Belgium and did not feature in the 0-0 draw (or subsequent advancement on penalties) vs. Netherlands in the semifinals. Argentina is using the same starting 11 as in that match.
Lineups as initially announced:
Also worth noting that Javier Mascherano will start for Argentina despite multiple injuries (including a blow to the head) suffered in the semifinal; Martin Demichelis will retain the starting position first won in the semifinal; and that Miroslav Klose will likewise remain in the starting 11 despite beginning the World Cup on the bench.
