All Ohio State wanted was another shot at Texas.
It got it, and this time came through.
Behind the play of quarterback Troy Smith, who ran for a touchdown and threw for another, the Buckeyes defeated Texas 24-20 in the CBS SportsLine.com Playoff Bracket.
Ohio State lost to Texas in the second game of the season 24-22, but won all three games in the tournament, including a 24-17 upset of No. 1 USC in the semifinals, to claim the national title.
Smith connected with Ted Ginn Jr., who made a leaping catch in the back of the end zone with 2:45 remaining, giving the Buckeyes the lead. The Longhorns had one final chance to win the game, but Vince Young was intercepted by Ashton Youboty with 1:40 left.
Smith was the MVP of the game as he finished with 212 yards passing and 53 yards rushing. Ted Ginn Jr. finished with six receptions for 72 yards, including the game-winning score.
So ends a “what could have been” scenario.
Some people like the thought of a playoff, others hate it. Some like the way the teams were selected, others feel small conference champions have no right being in a 16-team bracket, because it leaves out teams like LSU and Virginia Tech.
And what about those at-large schools? Do we use the BCS rankings that take into account biased polls like the AP and Harris, or should the NCAA have a selection committee like they do in college basketball?
The debate rages on and it's tough to please everybody, but one thing I think everybody would agree on – a playoff like this would provide excitement like no other sport has ever seen before.
