Dinara Safina, a former world No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam finalist, announced her retirement Sunday in Madrid.

The sister of former men's No. 1 Marat Safin, Safina has been battling a back injury for several years. She hasn't appeared in a tour event since 2011, though she had been attempting a comeback.

Safina, 28, won 12 times professionally and appeared in the finals of the Australian Open and French Open, twice reaching the championship at Roland Garros.

She never won a Grand Slam individually, though she does have a doubles title to her name from the 2007 U.S. Open. Safina is also an Olympic silver medalist.
