Serena Williams named top seed at US Open; Sharapova fifth

Serena Williams will begin her quest for a third consecutive US Open title Monday, and she'll do so as the No. 1 seed overall.

The USTA announced seedings Wednesday, with Simona Halep second, Petra Kvitova third, and Agnieszka Radwanska fourth. Li Na, the No. 3 player in the WTA rankings, withdrew from the tournament last month with a knee injury.

Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova is the No. 5 seed, which sets up a potential matchup between her and Williams in the quarterfinals. The runner-up to Williams the last two years, Victoria Azarenka, is seeded 16th. Azarenka has been hampered by a knee injury most of the year.

Venus Williams earned the No. 19 seed. Sloane Stephens (21) and Madison Keys (27) are the only other seeded Americans.

The draw will be Thursday at noon. Play starts Monday.
