Hewitt met with U.S. President George Bush during the President's visit to Australia and Asia in October. Australian Prime Minister John Howard invited Hewitt to hear Mr. Bush speak before the Australian Parliament and then to a private luncheon at The Lodge, the Prime Minister's residence in the Australian capital, Canberra.

He launched a defamation action against the ATP in the South Australian Supreme Court. He is suing the ATP for US$ 1.5 million. He's claiming he was unfairly fined for failing to show for a TV interview before a tournament in Cincinnati last August.

He was the three-time defending champion at the Stella Artois Championships in London, England.

He won his second consecutive Pacific Life Open in Indian Wells, California, claiming his 19th career singles title. He saved three match points against El Aynaoui before advancing to the second round.

He won the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic, in Scottsdale, Arizona, for the second time. He was the champion there in 2000 and runner-up in 1999.
