BBC extends deal to broadcast Wimbledon through 2014

LONDON -- Wimbledon will continue to be shown on free television in Britain through 2014 after the BBC signed a new five-year contract.

The British Broadcasting Corp.'s latest agreement, announced Wednesday, incorporates exclusive live rights for TV, radio and internet, and stretches the company's association with the grasscourt tournament to 87 years.

It starts in 2010, after the current deal ends.

"Wimbledon is all about a unique blend of tradition and innovation," said Ian Ritchie, the chief executive of the All England Club. "Our lengthy partnership with the BBC, which started in 1927, has been highly successful and we are delighted to extend that association."

The BBC will allow fans to watch key matches online for a week after the original broadcast.

Neither the All England Club nor the BBC disclosed the amount paid for the rights.
