Zeng upsets Sela in opening round at Shanghai Masters

SHANGHAI -- Shao Xuan Zeng, a 396th-ranked wild-card entry from China, upset Dudi Sela of Israel 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 Sunday in the first round at the Shanghai Masters.

The 44th-ranked Sela, who has reached a semifinal and two quarterfinals on tour this season, appeared to be headed for a straightforward victory when took five straight games to close the first set.

But he fell apart in the second, winning only one game when he broke Zeng's serve in the fifth.

After surrendering his serve in the opening game of the third, Sela pulled level at 4-4 before losing the final two games.

"I think that the crowd, their cheers are very helpful for me," Zeng said. "They're always cheering for me."

Zeng will now face fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France, who won the Japan Open in Tokyo on Sunday.

The top eight seeded players -- Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Juan Martin Del Potro, Andy Roddick, Tsonga, Nikolay Davydenko, Fernando Verdasco, Gilles Simon -- all received first-round byes.

Top-ranked Roger Federer withdrew from the tournament due to fatigue and No. 3 Andy Murray pulled out with a wrist injury.

Feliciano Lopez, who has struggled to find form all year, moved into the second round with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in an all-Spanish match, while Igor Kunitsyn beat fellow Russian Igor Andreev 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2.

"It's been a tough year for me," Lopez said. "I didn't win so many matches, so I have to be happy for being in the second round here."

Andreas Beck of Germany advanced when Jose Acasuso of Argentina retired with a knee injury while trailing 7-6 (2) 1-0.

"On one side, it was good for me because I only had one set to play," the 40th-ranked Beck said. "On the other side, it was not good to win like this when someone gets injured."

The 51st-ranked Acasuso has been bothered by a knee problem for more than a month.

"It started at the U.S. Open and still I feel the pain in Kuala Lumpur, and last week in Beijing, so now I go back to Argentina tomorrow," Acasuso said. "I feel the pain in my knee, so I can't run, and I feel the pain all the time."

Acasuso started strongly, racing to a 4-2 lead in the opening set after breaking Beck's serve at love in the fifth game, but surrendered his advantage when serving in the eighth game.
