Safin: Agassi should give his titles back

PARIS -- Former No. 1-ranked Marat Safin believes that Andre Agassi should give his tennis titles back after confessing he tested positive for a banned substance during his career and lied about it to the ATP.

Agassi admitted in his autobiography Open that he used crystal meth in 1997 and failed a drug test, a result he says was thrown out after he lied by saying he "unwittingly" took the substance.

Safin, who plans to retire this month, said in an interview with L'Equipe newspaper on Tuesday that Agassi should "give his titles, his money and his Grand Slam titles" back.

"I'm not defending the ATP, but what he said put it in a delicate position," Safin said. "The ATP allowed him to win a lot of tournaments, a lot of money. It kept his secret. Why does he need to be so cruel with it?"

Agassi, who retired in 2006, won 60 titles, including eight Grand Slams, during his career. He recently told the Associated Press that he had to speak about his lies because he couldn't live with it anymore.

"If he is as fair play as he says he is, he has to go to the end," Safin said. "You know, the ATP has a bank account and he can give the money back if he wants."

Safin, who will retire after this week's Paris Masters, won the 2000 U.S. Open and 2005 Australian Open. The 29-year-old Russian said he isn't going to write his autobiography when his career will be over.

"Me, I don't need money," he said. "The question is: Why did he do this? What is done is done. Does he hope to sell more books? It's absolutely stupid."

1) Can anyone show that Crystal Meth is a performance ENHANCER? If there was a sport called "Stay Awake The Longest", then it would be an enhancer. Otherwise, it does nothing to enhance athletic performance, indeed it would degrade athletic performance severely.

2) Did Agassi win ANY titles while testing positive? I see reference to one single test, not "tests&quo ...(more)

Talk about a waste of one's ability. Safin had all the tools to win more than the 2 grand slams then he won is his career. He was also well known to be the big party guy wherever he played. To come out with an interview at this point....who's looking for publicity now? Or could it be that when they played on another, Agassi ran him all over the court. The last I checked, Crystal Meth is not a p ...(more)

Andre is nothing short of arrogant in admitting this while writing a book.  Other players out there playing their butts off and doing it the right way while he got to play while taking a banned substance.  I think Safin is correct in calling him out.  Agassi was a wild child for most of his life and now all of a sudden he wants to be taken seriously.  Well, he can be taken seri ...(more)

Yeah, Agassi gives back all of the trophies and the money. Then Nike, Head, Adidas, Canon, Golden Grahams, CBS, NBC, ESPN and the ATP itself can give back all of the money they made off of him from 1987 through 2006.

Why do you think the ATP kept a lid on the test? They'd have to be idiots to remove him from a tournament tv schedule.

Just every every match Agassi has ev

Marat Safin, in his limited wisdom, is applying the same backward logic that Martina Navratilova used when she was quoted by Katie Couric on 60 minutes. To equate Andre Agassi with Roger Clemens or Mark McGwire and call him a cheater is ludicrous.

I give Andre a lot of credit for coming clean on the demons of his past; he was lucky enough to escape them and find happiness wit

Andre is retired, not comtemplating a comeback, not taking money out of any other players pocket...he's admitting past mistakes, period.  OK, yes he'll make a few dimes off this book, but for everything he and Steffi do for the community?  I don't hear about Marat Safin or Martina Navratilova Education centers or foundations.  As another post mentioned, if anything Agassi cost hi ...(more)

Seriously are we talking about Performance enhancing drugs here?  No,  this is crazy, this a about a guy trying to get a bit of press before he disappears from the sport of Tennis.  Im not a huge Tennis follower but when I do talk tennis or hear about it.  Safin is the last name I think of or associate with anything about it.

And the reason hes not going to be writ

(POLL) Ok first off, let me say I am a former Agassi fan and I think he is an idiot. Not just for doing Meth, but even ever mentioning it again.

But all this outrage and putting asterisks next to titles or whatever giv me a break this drug is not a performance enhancer, it is a performance killer and it is shocking that Agassi ever played good tennis after using that crap (if he even rea

Safin's just a poor loser.  He is still pissed that Agassi stopped him from being the world's youngest No. 1 ranked men's player back in 2000 when he got his ass kicked by Agassi in the Aussie Open.  It's not like Agassi used a drug to enhance his game.  he didnt need to.  If anything, the Meth hurt his game in 97.  Yeah, Agassi was wrong for doing drugs and lieing about i ...(more)

Read the quote at the end of the story.  Could it possibly BE more on-point?

No, he hasn't lost his mind (however much he had to lose).  He isn't any more crazy than he ever has been.  Like someone else said, he is MAKING A POINT.  It may be unfortunate he chose to make this point so publicly, but what did Agassi do?  Last I checked, he's currently on the tabl

The ATP has to play on ALL dirt Tennis Courts next year.  The reason?  you won't believe...........It's because SAFIN smoked all the grass and SNORTED all of the lines..................yep-its true!

Agassi, shouldn't have to give nothing back.  No money, no titles, nothing.   He earned everything he got.  And if ANYTHING he underach

Amazing - Safin's about the best example of wasted athletic potential that exists today, and there are quite a lot of people between Moscow, Paris and Manhattan who know why: he was a complete party boy who was regularly seen in clubs in all three cities to have served up a lot more white lines than those seen on a tennis court.
Hence, his highly erratic play between the real lines desp

There is so much to be said about this topic, but looks like it all been covered and I wanted to express my relief that so many feel the same way. I hope Safin feels the consequences of opening his mouth without first turning on the brain.
Agassi was one of the most loved players in all of tennis. Agassi like many, including Safin, lived the hard life that is professional tennis. So

You guys are missing the point.  Doesn't matter whether meth is a PED or hurts your performance.  If Agassi tells the truth for a positive drug test result, he would have been banned for at least a year, maybe two.  All endorsements gone, and who knows how his career would have turned out after being banned from competitive tennis for a while.

It's pretty obvious drugs didn't help him win tourneys. However, it is absolutely making him money right now. If he's got such a guilty conscience, why is he trying to make money off of it? I believe every penny from these book sales should be given to charity or tennis somehow. It's the right thing to do. He shouldn't need the money anyways.
