Schnyder into 2nd round at Open GDF Suez

PARIS (AP) -Patty Schnyder of Switzerland beat seventh-seeded Virginie Razzano of France 6-3, 7-6 (3) to reach the second round of the Open GDF Suez tournament on Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded Francesca Schiavone of Italy also advanced after routing Vesna Manasieva 6-0, 6-0. She broke the Russian player's serve six times and will next play Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic.

Schnyder pressured Razzano's serve, forcing 11 break points and converting three of them to edge through in a tight contest at the indoor tournament on hard courts at Stade Pierre de Coubertin.

Schnyder next plays Melanie Oudin of the United States, a U.S. Open quarterfinalist last year.

There were straight-sets wins Tuesday for Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, Andrea Petkovic of Germany, Safarova and Oudin.

Pavlyuchenkova broke Czech player Iveta Benesova's serve seven times in 6-1, 6-0 win; Petkovic had nine aces in a 7-5, 6-2 win against Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia; Oudin won 6-3, 6-0 against Romania's Sorana Cirstea, and Safarova had seven aces in her 6-0, 6-3 win against Tamira Paszek.

Tathiana Garbin of Italy struggled to get the better of Romanian qualifier Ioana Raluca Olaru in a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win. She next plays No. 8 Elena Vesnina of Russia.

Top-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia, last year's runner-up to Amelie Mauresmo, and No. 2 Flavia Pennetta of Italy have byes into the second round. Dementieva plays Pavlyuchenkova, and Pennetta faces Julie Coin of France or Alisa Kleybanova of Russia.
