TOKYO -- Fifth-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States was upset 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) by Youlia Fedossova, a French teen ranked 448th, in the first round of the Japan Open on Tuesday.
Fedossova, just 16, was born in Russia and has been playing tennis for eight years. She ended a five-match losing streak by qualifying for this week's tournament.
Shaughnessy is ranked 46th.
Three other seeded players lost: No. 3 Shinobu Asagoe of Japan, No. 6 Nicole Pratt of Australia, and No. 8 Arantxa Parra Santonja of Spain. No. 4 Kristina Brandi of Puerto Rico had to rally from a set down on another rain-marred day.
Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand, the 2001 runner-up, defeated Asagoe 6-0, 6-4; Evgenia Linetskaya of Russia beat Pratt 6-0, 1-6, 6-4; and 15-year-old Sesil Karatantcheva of Bulgaria ousted Parra Santonja 6-2, 6-4.
Brandi overcame Sandra Kleinova of the Czech Republic 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and seventh-seeded Klara Koukalova eased past Milagros Sequera of Venezuela 6-2, 6-2.
In men's play, Wayne Arthurs defeated Jean-Rene Lisnard 6-4, 7-5, and Wang Yeu-Tzuoo got past Jeff Morrison 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
Japanese wild card Goichi Motomura beat Glenn Weiner of the United States 6-4, 6-3 to set up a second-round match against top-seeded Lleyton Hewitt.
