MARSEILLE, France (AP) -- Top-seeded Guillermo Coria was upset by French qualifier Sebastien De Chaunac 6-4, 7-5 in a first-round match at the Open 13 on Wednesday.
De Chaunac next faces Britain's Greg Rusedski in the second round.
No. 2 David Nalbandian of Argentina survived against Rainer Schuettler, finally overcoming the German 6-7 (2), 6-4, 7-5.
Meanwhile, Sjeng Schalken of the Netherlands beat wild card Jerome Haehnel of France 6-4, 6-2 in a second-round match and was the first player to advance to the quarterfinals.
In remaining first-round matches, No. 8 Ivan Ljubicic of Croatia overcame Victor Hanescu of Romania 7-6 (6), 5-7, 6-4; Ivo Karlovic of Croatia beat Wang Yeu-tzuoo of Taiwan 6-4, 7-6 (4); and Taylor Dent of the United States downed Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-2, 6-2.
Also, Frenchman Arnaud Clement came from behind to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 against Paris Masters runner-up Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic.
