Clijsters and Davenport finally get clay showdown
Having suffered the usual abuse soccer players get from hostile crowds, Platini was pleasantly surprised at the peaceful atmosphere at Roland Garros.
"I have just watched my first tennis match," Platini said. "The atmosphere is so warm and friendly. There's much less hostility than in a soccer stadium. It makes a change from all the swear words that I used to hear."
Wearing a Panama hat to protect himself from the sun and 85-degree heat, Platini watched Richard Gasquet melt in straight sets against fellow 18-year-old Rafael Nadal on center court.
"They are two big stars of world tennis," Platini said. "It's just that one of them is slightly more precocious than the other."

PERFECT SCORE: Former French Open champion Carlos Moya just held on to beat Spanish countryman Fernando Vicente for the 12th consecutive time.
Vicente clawed back from a two-set deficit and saved six match points, but it was still not enough to beat close friend Moya, who won 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (3), 0-6, 6-4 in a match that took nearly four hours to complete.
Since his first win over Vicente in Bucharest nine years ago, Moya has beaten Vicente 10 times on clay and twice on hard courts.

NADAL WINS AGAIN: Rafael Nadal is considered by many the favorite to win the French Open. On Friday he picked up the first of what could be many prizes at Roland Garros.
Nadal won the Prix Bourgeon, awarded to the "tennis revelation of the year," as voted by an international gathering of tennis players past and present, journalists and photographers.
