The 10th-ranked Williams struggled to hold serve in the first set, breaking four times. Davenport raced to a 5-0 lead in the second set before Williams was able to hold her first game.

Davenport closed out the match on a backhand winner followed by a Williams return error.

Williams, a five-time Grand Slam singles winner, said after the match that she had trouble moving. She earlier complained of discomfort in her back or pelvis.

"I couldn't get my feet in position or move very much," Williams said.

Earlier Friday, Williams' younger sister, Serena Williams, pulled out of the tournament with a left knee injury.

In the other semifinal, No. 2 Kim Clijsters will play Russia's Elena Dementieva.
