Michigan State coach Tom Izzo was in excellent spirits following the Spartans' win over Providence. However, the coach did let his displeasure for officiating and the rule changes in college basketball be known after the game.
Michigan State was supposed to be good following its Final Four run in 2015. But I'm not sure even the most ardent Spartan supporters could have expected this after losing Travis Trice and Branden Dawson. The Spartans beat Providence 77-64 to win the Wooden Legacy and get out to a 7-0 start.
Michigan State's Denzel Valentine and Providence's Kris Dunn are probably first and second, in some order, in the National Player of the Year race. They'll play against each other Sunday night in the title game of the Wooden Legacy.
The John R. Wooden Award is given annually to the nation's top college basketball player. Kentucky and Indiana both have three players on the preseason Top 50 list. Wisconsin's Frank Kaminsky won the award last season.
