KEN VENTURI
(CBS Sports Broadcaster) Ken Venturi, who has provided commentary for CBS Sports' coverage of golf on the CBS Television Network since 1968, when he co-hosted the "CBS Golf Championship" and "CBS Golf Classic" with Jack Whitaker, will serve as captain of the U.S. team for the PGA TOUR's 2000 Presidents Cup, a biennial international match-play event. Venturi, the recipient of the 1999 PGA of America's Lifetime Achievement Award in Journalism, turned pro in 1956 and joined the PGA TOUR in June 1957. He established himself as one of golf's elite with his 1964 U.S. Open championship at Congressional Country Club in Washington, D.C. Not only was he named PGA Player of the Year that year, he was also chosen Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. He earned a total of 14 PGA TOUR victories in his career. He was a U.S. Ryder Cup team member (1965) and a member of the PGA Tournament Committee (1960-62). He is a 1953 graduate of San Jose (Calif.) State College. Venturi was born May 15, 1931 in San Francisco and now lives in Marco Island, Fla. |
