ACC weekend wrap-up
No. 1 Florida State 41, No. 10 Georgia Tech 35 |
The Yellow Jackets traded touchdowns with the top-ranked Seminoles during the first half, but could not counter-punch fast enough in the second. Chris Weinke completed 16 of 29 passes for 262 yards and three TDs, including a big 26-yard scoring toss to Peter Warrick which gave the Seminoles a 14-point lead in the third quarter. Florida State continued its home dominance of ACC opposition despite the brilliance of Joe Hamilton, who completed 22 of 25 passes for 387 yards for the Yellow Jackets. |
Wake Forest 34, Army 15 |
Wake Forest's Kane Morgan was too much for the Cadets, rushing for a career-high 220 yards and scoring twice. The Deacons held a slim 10-9 edge at the half before waltzing away thanks to a 17-point fourth quarter. |
Clemson 33, No. 22 Virginia 14 |
After a miserable campaign last year and getting handled by Marshall last weekend, the Tigers took out their frustrations on the stunned Wahoos. Clemson, getting its first win under new coach Tommy Bowden, led 33-0 before the Cavs got on the board and managed to hold Virginia bull Thomas Jones under 100 yards (97). |
No. 23 North Carolina State 38, William & Mary 9 |
N.C. State quarterback Jamie Barnette completed 17 of 22 passes for 237 yards before taking a seat as the Wolfpack took it easy on the Division I-AA Tribe. |
East Carolina 27, Duke 9 |
The Pirates follow last week's win over the Big East's West Virginia with a win over the ACC's Blue Devils. Not a major coup on a national scale, but a nice feather in the cap of ECU and Conference USA. |
Maryland 51, Western Carolina 10 |
The visiting Division I-AA Catamounts scored first on a 37-yard field goal before Maryland ran away and hid. |
North Carolina 42, Indiana 30 |
In the battle of the Carolina-Hoosier point guards, Ronald Curry and Antwaan Randle El each accounted for three touchdowns; but the Tar Heels had more going for them. |
