No. 4 Florida 58, Central Florida 27
In the Gators' final tune-up before playing host to Tennessee, Doug Johnson threw for four scores and Florida scored seven touchdowns in leading 48-14 at halftime. Florida reserves played the entire second half, keeping the margin of victory from being even worse.

Florida has gained 1,193 yards in its first two games, including a season-opening romp over Western Michigan. Not that there is much celebrating going on. The real season begins with the game against Tennessee.

No. 12 Georgia 24, South Carolina 9
Lou Holtz's new team almost got shut out for a second consecutive week, but got a field goal late in the third quarter and a touchdown late in the fourth. Georgia built a 14-0 lead at halftime but struggled to put the Gamecocks away. The Bulldogs were plagued by a fumble in South Carolina territory and at least a dozen dropped passes, but Quincy Carter still had a big day, connecting with Terrence Edwards on a 47-yard touchdown.

No. 21 Alabama 37, Houston 10
A week after some major struggles on offense, Alabama was much more potent, led by -- who else? -- Shaun Alexander. The senior running back scored three times and accounted for 192 total yards. The Crimson Tide's early lead allowed coach Mike DuBose to get more playing time for highly touted redshirt freshman Tyler Watts, who directed a 78-yard scoring drive in his second series.

Vanderbilt 34, Northern Illinois 31
Jimmy Williams scored on a 65-yard punt return with 1:41 left, and Vanderbilt erased a 25-point second-half deficit to stun Northern Illinois. Vanderbilt trailed 28-3 early in the second half, but came back strong against the Huskies, who have won only three games in the past three seasons and lost their 1999 opener to Division I-AA Western Illinois.
Mississippi 38, Arkansas State 14
Arkansas State led 14-7 in the first quarter before Mississippi got the offense rolling. The Rebels scored the final 31 points and rolled up 484 yards in coach David Cutcliffe's first home game. Joe Gunn, filling in for an injured Deuce McAllister, caught one pass for a touchdown and ran for another. He rushed for a career high 155 yards on 25 carries.
Kentucky 45, Connecticut 14
Kentucky scored four fourth-quarter touchdowns to pull away from Connecticut and infuriate UConn coach Randy Edsall, who refused to shake hands with UK coach Hal Mumme after the game. Mumme said he wasn't trying to run up the score, merely trying to get experience for his young offense, which hit its stride after the game was tied 14-14 at halftime.
Auburn 30, Idaho 23
Trailing 23-0, the Vandals battled back and made a game of it late. With starting QB John Welsh still feeling the effects of a hip pointer suffered in the opener, former starter Ed Dean stepped in and threw three scoring passes in the fourth quarter.
Mississippi State 13, Memphis 10
For the second week in a row, Memphis got embroiled in a defensive battle with a team from Mississippi, and came up a field goal short. Last week, it was a 3-0 loss to Ole Miss, and this time, they couldn't get over the hump against the Bulldogs. Last year, Mississippi State ground out a 14-6 triumph.
Louisiana State 52, North Texas 0
A week after struggling to get past San Jose State, the Tigers had no problem with the Mean Green. LSU got two quick rushing TDs from Rondell Mealey and were off to the races.
