C-USA weekend wrap-up

Conference Wraps: A glance at every game
ACC | Big East | Big Ten | Big 12 | Big West | C-USA
Independents | MAC | MWC | Pac-10 | SEC | WAC

East Carolina 27, Duke 9
David Garrard put together 310 yards of total offense for the Pirates, who moved to 2-0 for the first time since 1989.

East Carolina followed last week's win over the Big East's West Virginia with a win over the ACC's Blue Devils -- not a major coup on a national scale, but a nice feather in the cap of ECU and Conference USA. And Steve Logan's club continued to establish itself as a contender for the league title. Game story.

No. 21 Alabama 37, Houston 10
Alabama running back Shaun Alexander had another big week, rushing for 167 yards, catching a pass for 25 more and scoring three TDs as the Tide made amends for a disappointing performance in a win last week over Vanderbilt.

Houston had posted a nice win last week over Rice (28-3), but the Cougars were never able to get seriously in this game. Game story

Southern Mississippi 40, Northwestern State 6
For a game in which Southern Mississippi gained only 288 yards and 16 first downs, the defense more than bailed out the offense in the one-sided victory over the Div. I-AA semifinalists of 1998.

Get a load of some of USM's defensive highlights: blocked a field goal and ran it back for a touchdown, ran back a fumble 64 yards for a touchdown, blocked a pat and ran it back for a two-point conversion. Game story.

Louisville 58, Tennessee-Chattanooga 30
Pass-happy Louisville went to the ground to pound out the Mocs, as Frank Moreau rushed for 189 yards. Only six of Chris Redman's 33 passes hit the ground; 25 were caught by teammates, two were caught by Mocs. They were good for 238 yards and two touchdowns as the Cardinals moved to 2-0, with non-league games against Illinois and Oklahoma up next. Game story
Mississippi State 13, Memphis 10
For the second week in a row, Memphis got embroiled in a defensive battle with a team from Mississippi, and came up a field goal short. Last week, it was a 3-0 loss to Ole Miss, and this time, they couldn't get over the hump against the Bulldogs. Last year, Mississippi State ground out a 14-6 triumph. Game story
Virginia Tech 31, Alabama-Birmingham 10
After watching the Hokies jump out to a 17-point lead to start the game, the Blazers pulled to within a touchdown at the half, but were shut out the rest of the way.

Playing without starting QB Michael Vick, the Hokies resorted to some trickery, using a 35-yard halfback pass from Andre Kendrick to Andre Davis to avoid the upset. Game story

Wake Forest 34, Army 15
Wake Forest's Kane Morgan was too much for the Cadets, rushing for a career-high 220 yards and scoring twice. The Deacons held a slim 10-9 edge at the half before waltzing away thanks to a 17-point fourth quarter.
Tulane 53, Southern Methodist 19
Patrick Ramsey connected on TD passes of 6, 26 and 8 yards to Adrian Burnette and Tulane got back in the win column after having their 13-game streak snapped last week by Southern Miss.
Troy State 31, Cincinnati 24
Troy State doesn't join Div. I-A until the 2001 season, but you could have fooled Cincinnati. The Bearcats were stunned early by a couple of Brock Nutter touchdown passes, and then Kovey Jones foiled a Cincinnati comeback attempt by returning a fourth-quarter interception 39 yards for a touchdown. Game story.
