Big 12 weekend wrap-up
No. 5 Nebraska 45, California 0 |
The Bears missed two field goals, and the rest was Nebraska's Eric Crouch being a star. Crouch ran for two touchdowns, passed for a 70-yarder and caught a 60-yarder from Bobby Newcombe (who also ran for one). Crouch became the first Cornhusker to score all three ways in a game since Johnny Rodgers pulled it off en route to the 1972 Heisman Trophy. The Cal defense wasn't all that bad, other than the two long touchdown passes, giving up just 114 yards rushing and 57 yards passing. The Bears' offense, however, never could get anything going (145 net yards) against Nebraska's Black Shirt defense. |

Oklahoma State 46, Tulsa 9 |
Ethan Howell caught five passes for 107 yards for Oklahoma State, which wasted little time in blasting the Golden Hurricane.
Colorado 63, San Jose State 35 |
Having been embarrassed by rival Colorado St. in a lopsided game last weekend, the Buffs (1-1) went storming out to a 28-0 lead and never looked back, as they cruised to a 63-35 win. Quaterback Mike Moschetti threw for a school-record 465 yards, two touchdown passes and ran for a third score. Cortlen Johnson ran for 104 yards and three scores for the winners. |
Iowa State 17, Iowa 10 |
The Cyclones beat Iowa for the second year in a row -- something that had not happened since 1981-82. The Hawkeyes fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter, and never quite recovered. |
| UNLV 27, Baylor 24
In one of the most shocking endings in college football history, UNLV's Kevin Thomas returned a fumble 99 yards for the game-winning TD to push the Rebels to 2-0 on the year after they failed to win a game last season. Baylor, with UNLV pinned back on its own goal line and without a timeout, opted to try to punch it in instead of taking a knee. The ball, however, popped loose and Thomas was off to the races.

Texas Tech 38, Louisiana-Lafayette 17 |
Without Heisman Trophy candidate Ricky Williams, the Red Raiders struggled with the Ragin Cajuns for a while, but scored 10 points in the second half to put it away. |
Kansas 71, Cal-State Northridge 14 |
The Jayhawks scored 57 points in the second and third quarters on their way to mauling the Division I-AA Matadors. |
No. 17 Kansas State 40, Temple 0
Senior running back Frank Murphy came off the bench to run for 149 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns in the 17th-ranked Wildcats' 40-0 rout of hapless Temple. Murphy had scoring runs of 31 and seven yards to key a 23-point second quarter for Kansas State.
Oklahoma 49, Indiana State 0 |
The Sooners accumulated over 500 yards of total offense, including 366 through the air as it didn't take long for coach Bob Stoops' team to take the wind out of the Division I-AA Sycamores. |
Texas 38, Rutgers 21 |
Jeremy Jones set the tone by returning a blocked punt 11 yards for a score just over a minute into the game, as the Longhorns got out to a 28-3 first-quarter lead and cruised to a 38-21 victory over Rutgers (0-2) in Piscataway, N.J.. Major Applewhite threw two touchdown passes (28 and 21 yards) for Texas (2-1). |
