Big East Game of the Week
No. 3 Penn State 27, No. 8 Miami 23 |
Carmouche column: Butch Davis botches big chance
Just as after Miami had rallied back to put the Nittany Lions on the brink, Penn State found a way to stay in the national championship race. The Lions answered with a 79-yard touchdown pass of their own, with Chafie Fields taking it all the way with 1:41 left for the game-winning touchdown in the rain-drenched Orange Bowl.
The Hurricanes had roared back from a 17-3 deficit, taking a 23-20 lead on James Jackson's 39-yard TD run with 7:42 left in the game. And when Miami's Edward Reed intercepted a pass by Rashard Casey, who alternated at quarterback with Thompson, it looked like the Hurricanes (2-1) would claim their biggest victory in coach Butch Davis' five years.
But Penn State (4-0) stopped Miami on fourth-and-2 at the Lions 21, and Fields wasted little time, catching a bomb to go with the 49-yard touchdown pass he'd caught in the first half. The Nittany Lions intercepted four passes and forced a fumble from Miami quarterback Kenny Kelly. |
Other Big East action

No. 6 Michigan 18, Syracuse 13 |
Led by cornerback James Whitley, Michigan's defense set up two field goals with interceptions, came up with a key safety and then turned back a final Syracuse threat in the Carrier Dome.
The Orangemen (2-1) appear ready to steal a victory away from Michigan (3-0), driving the length of the field in the final three minutes. Syracuse made it to the Michigan 9, but Madei Williams' fourth-and-4 pass was beyond the reach of diving Pat Woodcock -- which the Orangemen thought should have been called pass interference -- and Michigan took over on downs and ran out the clock.
>Jeff Del Verne's 31-yard field goal with 3:42 to play gave Michigan a five-point advantage and put Syracuse in a touchdown-or-nothing situation. The triumph avenged last year's stinging 38-28 loss to the Orangemen at Ann Arbor. |

Boston College 14, Navy 10 |
Carlton Rowe scored on a 6-yard run midway through the fourth quarter as the Eagles (2-0) rallied to beat Navy, which had taken the lead moments earlier. Rowe's touchdown capped a six-play, 73-yard drive for the Eagles, answering a 68-yard touchdown drive that had given Navy (1-2) its first lead of the day. |
Maryland 33, West Virginia 0 |
It's painfully obvious that this year's West Virginia football team isn't nearly as good as the one that made its third straight postseason appearance last year. That doesn't make this blowout defeat any easier to take for the Mountaineers (1-2). LaMont Jordan ran for a career-high 164 yards and unbeaten Maryland (3-0) is off to its best start in four years. |
Pittsburgh 30, Kent 23 |
Kevan Barlow rushed for a career-high 206 yards, including touchdown runs of 61 and 57 yards, to lead the Panthers at Pitt Stadium. Kent (0-3) had the nation's longest major-college losing streak extended to 16 games. Pitt's Nick Goings' had 97 yards rushing, as the Panthers (2-1) amassed 351 yards on the ground., was one of the best running efforts by Pitt (2-1) in recent years. |
Akron 25, Temple 15 |
After getting shut out in their first two games, the Owls managed to score against the Zips. The only problem was that it didn't happen until the fourth quarter and by then Akron held a 25-0 lead and was not about to be reeled in. |
