WAC Game of the Week

No. 21 UCLA 35, Fresno State 21
The Bulldogs looked ready to shock the Bruins in the early going, but settled down when Drew Bennett, demoted in favor of Cory Paus, came on after the freshman was sidelined with bruised ribs. Bennett was 13 of 24 for 176 yards and two touchdowns. UCLA was at full strength for the first time after getting 10 players -- including six starters -- back on the field after they were suspended for using unauthorized disabled parking permits.

Other WAC action

Texas 18, Rice 13
It was tighter than the Horns would have liked, but Hodges Mitchell made sure there would be no upsets. Mitchell, a 5-foot-7, 190-pounder, gained a career-best 188 yards, while QB Major Applewhite completed 26 of 40 passes for 240 yards. The win was the third straight for Texas after opening its season with a loss to North Carolina State.
No. 16 Kansas State 40, Texas-El Paso 7
Kansas State's Frank Murphy continued his impressive year, gaining 156 yards on 24 carries as the Wildcats romped. Quincy Morgan also had a big night for Kansas State, catching four balls for 140 yards and TDs of 41 and 58 yards.
No. 7 Texas A&M 62, Tulsa 13
They trailed after a quarter of play, but the Aggies turned around the Golden Hurricane in the second quarter, posting 28 points and erasing all hopes of an upset. The big star of the day was junior receiver Chris Taylor, who caught six passes for 177 yards and a TD. That one scoring toss was a 96-yarder from Randy McCown.
San Jose St. 38, St. Mary's (Calif.) 3
Deonce Whitaker continued his splendid season, scoring five TDs while cutting up the Division I-AA Gaels for 203 yards on 24 carries. Whitaker, a 5-foot-6, 180-pound junior, has gained 504 yards rushing and scored nine TDs in the Spartans' three games this year. His Saturday effort was highlighted by an 89-yard kickoff return for a TD.
Hawaii 34, Boise State 19
A week after breaking a 19-game losing streak by beating Division I-AA Eastern Illinois, the Rainbows, under first-year coach June Jones, pitched a second-half shutout at the Broncos and suddenly find themselves in the midst of a winning streak. The Broncos led 19-7 at the break, but couldn't move the ball in the second half and had no answer for Hawaii QB Dan Robinson, who threw for two fourth-quarter TDs and ran for another.
