Big 12 Game of the Week

No. 4 Nebraska 20, Southern Miss 13
Dodd column: 'Huskers house is crumbling quickly.

Linebacker Julius Jackson returned a fumble and an interception for touchdowns as Nebraska's defense made up for a poor offensive showing at home.

Southern Miss (2-1) outgained Nebraska 293 yards to 183 and threatened to tie it with 1:17 left in the game, but Keyuo Craver intercepted Jeff Kelly at the Nebraska 1-yard line and the Huskers (3-0) avoided the upset. It was Craver's second interception of the game.

Other Big 12 action

No. 7 Texas A&M 62, Tulsa 13
They trailed after a quarter of play, but the Aggies turned around the Golden Hurricane in the second quarter, posting 28 points and erasing all hopes of an upset. The big star of the day was junior receiver Chris Taylor, who caught six passes for 177 yards and a TD. That one scoring toss was a 96-yarder from Randy McCown.

Next, the Aggies play host to Southern Mississippi, which pushed Nebraska right to the final play Saturday.

No. 16 Kansas State 40, UTEP 7
Kansas State's Frank Murphy continued his impressive season, gaining 156 yards on 24 carries as the Wildcats romped. Quincy Morgan also had a big night for Kansas State (2-0), catching four balls for 140 yards and TDs of 41 and 58 yards.
Oklahoma 41, Baylor 10
Bob Stoops and his Sooners (2-0) are still undefeated, and Josh Heupel is throwing the ball like crazy. Heupel set Oklahoma single-game records for completions, attempts, passing yards and total offense in the Big 12 opener for both teams. Heupel was 37-of-54 for 420 yards and three touchdowns for the Sooners.

Baylor (0-3) had lost its opener to Boston College on a missed extra point in overtime, and last week saw UNLV return a fumble 99 yards for a touchdown on the game's final play, when all the Bears had to do was take a knee to preserve a victory.

Mississippi St. 29, Oklahoma St. 11
Freshman Dontae Walker rushed for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Bulldogs (3-0) beat the Cowboys (1-2), in a game marred by 12 turnovers -- six by each team -- and 195 yards in penalties. Walker's 54-yard TD run at the start of the second quarter came one play after Ashley Cooper recovered a fumble by Cowboys quarterback Ben Bowling. That fumble was the first play after the Bulldogs fumbled away a punt return.
Colorado 51, Kansas 17
Mike Moschetti threw two touchdown passes before leaving the game with a sprained knee, and Jeremy Aldrich kicked a school-record five field goals as Colorado (2-1), avenging an upset at the hands of the Jayhawks last year. After Kansas (1-2) rallied for two quick touchdowns to close to within 33-17 in the third quarter, the Buffs added 18 points in the first three minutes of the final period, including cornerback Ben Kelly's 96-yard TD return with a fumble recovery.
Texas 18, Rice 13
It was tighter than the Horns would have liked, but Hodges Mitchell made sure there would be no upsets. Mitchell, 5-7, 190 pounds, gained a career-best 188 yards, while QB Major Applewhite completed 26 of 40 passes for 240 yards. The win was the third straight for Texas after opening its season with a loss to North Carolina State.
North Texas 21, Texas Tech 14
A big win for the Mean Green and the Big West … the second time in three years they have beaten the Red Raiders. Tech RB Ricky Williams (knee) was sitting out, but that didn't account for the way the Raiders couldn't stop North Texas when they had to.

North Texas, which hadn't scored an offensive TD in the first 10 quarters of the season, scored two in the third quarter, including a 46-yard scoring strike from Jason Attaway to Broderick McGrew.

Iowa State 24, UNLV 0
Darren Davis rushed for 208 yards and two touchdowns as Iowa State spoiled UNLV and coach John Robinson's home opener. It was Robinson's first loss in three games with the Runnin' Rebels. Davis, who had 37 carries, scored on two 1-yard runs in the first half for the Cyclones (3-0). The Cyclones, who limited the Rebels to only 106 yards and six first downs, led 17-0 at halftime.
Missouri 48, Western Michigan 34
A 24-point second quarter was all the Tigers needed to bust open a close game and put the Broncos away. The Tigers controlled the game with their offense, eating up 36:50 of the clock and keeping Bronco QB Tim Lester on the sideline. Senior RB DeVaughn Black did the bulk of the damage for Larry Smith's Tigers, picking up 205 yards on 32 carries. He now has 345 yards in two games.
